How is there math in composition?
Fractions are used in composition within a photo. Rule of thirds is one composition that is used to make a photograph look pleasing to the eyes. The rule of thirds breaks down a photo into nine equal parts. This helps with lining up horizontal and vertical lines. The rule of thirds can give your subjects a sense of direction within the image. While using the rule of thirds your photos will have more balance and be more pleasing to the viewer. The rule of thirds allows for the viewers eye to be drawn to the image in a certain order. It is important for the viewers eyes to be drawn to the image in a specific order because it allows for the eyes to move around the frame and see the whole image. In figure 7, we can see how the frame gets spit up into 9 sections. The subjects must be placed along the lines that intersect one another.
The lens of a camera is one of the most important parts in getting a good image. All of the settings that we have talked about above happen within the camera and some of them happen within the lens. There are many angles that are in camera lens. The angle of view has to deal with the measurement of how much of an object a lens can capture. The angle is shown in degrees and can be measured horizontally, vertically, and diagonally across an image. The angle is an important part in knowing how much of an image your camera can take in and capture. This relates back when we talked about the focal length. Lenses that have shorter focal lengths are going to be able to capture much more of a scene. Shorter focal lengths are able to capture more of a scene because they do not zoom in as much. We can see this in figure 8. This figure allows us to easily see the difference between an 18 mm lens and a 300 mm lens. With the 18mm lens the angle of view is much larger than it is in the 300 mm lens.
