What does Jurassic Park have to do with Chaos Thoery?
In the 1990 book Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, a mathematician by the name of Dr. Ian Malcom is a key character. Malcom specializes in Chaos Theory and discusses the theory throughout the book. This ficticious character explains theories, ideas, and basic models of Chaos Theory, allowing the reader to learn basic models within Chaos Theory. Most people who remember reading the book are generally familiar with the Theory of Chaos.
In the book, Malcom describes how tiny patterns are seen throughout the world. For example, a rock has tiny patterns, and when zoomed out, rocks have similar patterns to mountains. Another example is how a day represents a lifetime.
For those who are familiar with the story of Jurassic Park (spoiler alert), the park ends in shambles as the result of dinosaurs getting loose, hunting and killing people, and the park being deserted as it is uninhabitable by humans. Malcom claims that there was too much that could go wrong. Therefore, he had calculated that the park would end in disaster using Chaos Theory.
The 1993 movie also addresses Chaos but only in a short clip:
For a learner who might be interested in learning more about Chaos Theory, the book Jurassic Park is highly recommended.
