The Birthday Problem

History and Background

There is a bit of debate on who first came up with this birthday problem. The general consensus is that Richard von Mises, a notable mathematician who "advanced statistics and probability theory," established a variation of this question in 1939 (Britannica, 2023). However, there are people that claim Harold Davenport came up with a variation of this problem before Mises (Borchia and Rain, 2019). Regardless of who first came up with the problem, probability problems that have counterintuitive solutions like this birthday problem/paradox and the Monty Hall problem tend to become relatively famous and can be a lot of fun to learn about.
