Pi is recognized by almost anyone who has graduated the seventh grade, yet
Professor William L. Schaaf said of pi, "Probably no symbol in mathematics has evoked as
much mystery, romanticism, misconception and human interest as the number pi" (Mometrix 2022).
This mathematical constant is commonly recognized and has become fundamental to our society-
students can recite the formula for the area of a circle as "pi r squared" as if they were reading
it from the back of their hands, pi day is celebrated by most school classes, and the symbol for pi is
included in symbol keyboards in close to every program. However, do people truly understand where
this mathematical constant comes from and why it's important?
