Project

I am getting really excited about my semester project!

The topic is:

Interesting Problems in Probability.

I think these problems are so cool, and fun to learn more about. My project will be about some of these, and help us learn more about them!
Some of these are:

Betrand's box Paradox

This is about ballots and what the probability is that one candidate is always ahead of another.

Boy or Girl Paradox

This is about the probability that a second child is a girl or boy depending on what the first child is.

Buffon's Needle Problem

This is about dropping needles to estimate pi.

Coupon Collector's Problem

This is about the probability that you get enough or all of the coupons for something.

Gambler's Ruin

This is a concept in statistics that a gambler with a negative expected value will eventually go broke.

German Tank Problem

This is about taking a random sample of a finite set and using that random sample to estimate how many terms were in the set.

Mabinogion Sheep Problem

This is about two flocks of sheep, one white and one black, that keep switching. You have to find a way to maximize the expected final number of black sheep.

Monty Hall Problem

This has to do with 3 doors, where you are looking for a specific outcome that is only behind one of the doors. If you choose one of the doors, and then are told that one of the two you did not choose has the unwanted outcome, is it better to stay with the door you already chose or to switch?

Pill Puzzle

This has to do with a jar of pills. If a whole pill is taken out, it is cut in half. Half is consumed and half is returned. If a half pill is taken out, it is just consumed. We want to know the expected number of half pills remaining when the last whole pill is taken out of the jar.

These are all very simple explanations of the problems to start with.
