Assignment 1: Applets and Internet Resources
Title Description
Rossman/Chance Applet Collection This applet collection is mainly for probability and statistics. It is a collection that takes you to their own applets, but it also provides JavaScript for some that people are free to use.
Statistics Applets from Math Medic This website provides applets for statistics that include topics such as distributions, probability, and more.
Mathematics applets for high school topics This applet collection provides applets for the main subjects taught in high school, including some virtual manipulatives such as pentominoes and grid paper.
Geometry applets This applet collection is a collection of Java script applets that all have to do with topics in geometry. It covers beginner through advanced geometry, and even has student made applets
Penn State Applets This applet collection is created by a Penn State professor for a wide variety of math and statistics topics such as graph theory, geometry, calculus, and many more.

Applets

Title Description
Trig functions and music notes This applet focuses on how music notes and their frequencies relate to trigonometric functions, namely sine. It has 7 different interactive sections that both explain the trig functions and connect them to music notes. The audio was not working on my computer, but there is an audio transcript that was very helpful.
Exploring ratios with water cups This applet lets students explore equivalent ratios by putting food coloring in water to match the color of the other cup. It gives the student the ratio of the other cup (water:drops), and they must match it.
Trig function applet This applet lets students explore trigonometric functions by changing the amplitude, frequency, and phase shift. This would help them understand how trigonometric functions can be transformed. Also, in the context of my project, this can help them understand amplitude and frequency before they have to know how those factors work with music notes.
Interactive Unit Circle This applet is an interactive unit circle that displays how the values of the unit circle compare to the graph of a trig function. This would help students to understand the correlation between the unit circle and trigonometric functions.
Another unit circle applet This applet is on Geogebra, and it shows the unit circle with only the sine wave. This would be helpful for my project as the sine wave is mostly what I will be focusing on.

Title Type Description
Harmony and trigonometry Video This is a video explaining how trigonometry relates to musical harmonies. It goes through how notes are shown through sine waves, and how when notes are played together, their sine waves interact to show harmonies, whether consonant or dissonant. It also shows a bit of the unit circle and how that relates to music as well.
Musical Interval Calculator Website This website allows you to calculate the interval between two notes, and it shows you whether it is consonant or dissonant. You can also listen to the notes being played at the same time.
The hidden math of harmony Article on webpage This is a simpler article that discusses the math behind choir and harmonies and why it sounds good to our ears.
Mathematical Harmony Analysis Journal Article This journal article goes in depth to the ratios behind consonant and dissonant harmonies and the math behind them. This journal article is much more in depth than the previous article
Music as math waves: exploring trigonometry through sound Journal Article This journal article is about how we can teach students about trigonometry through music and sound waves. It is also more in depth, but is very readable and helpful.
