Agenda Six Assignment:
5 Mathlet Libraries
5 Applets for teaching about Histograms:
  • Bar Charts: To begin a lesson on histograms I would want to discuss graphical representations that the students would be familiar with, such as a bar chart. This manipulative will help us explore bar charts before jumping into histograms themselves.
  • Area of Rectangles: Next I'd want to review how to find the area of a rectangle because for a histogram, area = percent.
  • Percents: Another key component that will help develop a students understanding of histograms is the concept of percents, so I would take a few minutes to go over what a percent is and how it works.
  • Changing Intervals: Although this applet does not actually display a proper histogram (with density as the y axis) it does show how we can start to convert a bar chart to a histogram by changing the interval length. This could spark a discussion to get us to the concept of representing density.
  • What's Wrong?: Lastly, I would present this applet and ask, "What is wrong with this Histogram?" Hopefully, after exploring the applet students will realize that again, density is not being repressnted properly. We can then have a discussion that this is the most common error with histograms.

5 Online Resources for Math Teaching:
  • Songs for Teaching: Many students struggle with remember formulas and concepts. The link provided will link you to a website dedicated to creating fun song lyrics based on math with popular songs.
  • Movies and Math: Another way to make math more interesting is to relate it to pop culture and the movies. This link will take you to a site where movie clips are linked with math concepts and worksheets.
  • Interactive Statistics Text: I thought this would be a good link to keep as I want to teach AP Statistics. This interactive textbook may have many things I can use for class.
  • Starters with Application of Concepts: This site is full of starters based on application of several concepts. Great way to start off a lesson!
  • Math Cheat Sheets: I really liked this link that Alison showed in class. I have a hard time remembering all the formulas for various topics, and here they are!
